Up for auction is this spectacular vintage 1950s - 1960s Jean Louis designer brocade pants & coat suit.  Just look at the pictures and see how beautiful this eye catching pants suit is!!!
Jean Louis Berthault
(1907-1997) was born in Paris, and as a young man worked at the House of Agnes-Drecoll. He went to New York in 1935, where he obtained a position with Hattie Carnegie. He worked there for seven years before heading to Hollywood in 1943. There he had a contract with Columbia Pictures, as an assistant to Travis Banton. When Banton left Columbia, Jean Louis was made the head designer there.
Jean Louis worked in the movies, first at Columbia, and later at Universal. During this time he also did the private wardrobes of many of his star clients, including the television wardrobe for Loretta Young in 1953.
In 1961 he left the studios to form his own design firm, Jean Louis, Inc. He specialized in cocktail and evening dresses and suits. He also freelanced for the studios. Jean Louis retired from designing in 1988.
It was Jean Louis who designed the infamous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress, worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 as she sang at JFK’s birthday party Jean Louis designed clothing for Nancy Reagan, Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, Lana Turner, Vivian Leigh, Joan Crawford, Julie Andrews, The Duchess of Windsor, Judy Garland, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich and many other Hollywood starlets.  He was nominated for and won Academy awards for his designs that appeared in over 60 Hollywood films.
This pants suit was custom made for a prominent socialite and foreign dignitary who spent time in Los Angeles, Scottsdale and Milwaukee among other places.  For privacy reasons we are not posting her name here. . but if you want more information about her just email us and we will provide a bit more background on this fabulous pants suit!!!  This pants suit is made of a red orange fabric that feels like a silk poly blend but we are not sure.  This pants suit is heavily accented throughout with sparkling golden floral & paisley brocade designs.  THE COAT closes in front with a hidden zipper and a few snaps.  The shoulders are lightly padded.  There are two pockets on the lower front.  There is a 13 3/8" overlapping slit at the center back bottom hem.  This jacket is fully lined.  A matching belt with fringe ends creates a sleek & figure flattering look.  THE PANTS have a zipper closure in the front with two hook closures at the waist.  There are two angled pockets in the front.  Like the jacket these pants are fully lined.  As the pictures demonstrate this custom made Jean Louis designer pants & jacket suit is in excellent vintage condition and ready to wear!!!
