THE TURKEY DID NOT COME FROM TURKEY
It is a North American bird and was a
popular Red Indian dish before Columbus
arrived in 1492. Domestic turkeys first
came to Europe when Spaniards brought
them back from America about 1519.
From Spain the bird was introduced to
the rest of Europe and first appeared in
England about 1524. The turkey got its
name through being confused with an
African bird, the guinea-fow!, to which
it is related. When the guinea-fowl was
imported by the Portuguese from Guinea,
in West Africa, it was called the guinea-
fowl ; when imported by the Turks from
Egypt it was called the turkey-cock.
When the guinea-fowls American cousin
turned up, this was thought to be another
species of guinea-fowl or turkey-cock.
