Description
.00 1861 Egg Harbor Bank (NJ) Note – PMG Extremely Fine 40Offered for your consideration is a .00 note issued by a New Jersey bank soon after the outbreak of the American Civil War. The note is dominated at the left by a large vignette depicting a young maiden representing Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, seated within the arms of the letter “
V
”, the Roman numeral for five (the denomination). A second vignette, depicting a reclining maiden, probably representing Navigation, as she holds a compass on a chart, with a sextant, globe, and books around. Below this is a short, financial obligation which states that “
On demand THE Egg Harbor Bank Will pay FIVE DOLLARS to the bearer.
”. This is followed by the location, “
Egg Harbor City
”, and the date “
July 1,
186
1
”.
Two signatures, one of “
Chs. Herman
” as “
Cash.r
” and the other of “
C H Carpenter Jr
” (?) as “
Pres.t
”, guarantee the value of this note. The denomination is repeated in three corners, as well as in two green protectorates near the center. The back of the note, as with many issues of the era, was left blank. The note was printed by the “
American Bank Note Company
”, as evidenced by their imprint at the bottom center on the front (this imprint is within the denomination repeated along the bottom border). An attractive issue from the opening days of the Civil War.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“Extremely Fine 40”
, with an additional notation indicating that the note has “
Pinholes
” (these pinholes appear to be centered around the vignette depicting Navigation). Light toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to the paper a somewhat off-white hue to the unprinted areas (especially the unaccomplished back). The contrast is excellent, with the protectorate offering a small flash of color among the black and white scenes of the overall design. The edges are slightly irregular, with the inner frame-line and several design elements being affected in numerous locations. Ink corrosion can be seen at the signatures when the note is viewed from the back. A small amount of paper is missing from the lower right corner. A sharp looking specimen of this popular issue.
