Description
1872 .00 South Carolina Revenue Bond Scrip – PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQOffered for your consideration is a post-Civil War note issued during the turbulent years of Reconstruction. The central vignette depicts the famous Revolutionary War meeting between General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox”, inviting a British officer to share his dinner. Several soldiers appear in the background, while a servant holds a cup and gathers up ears of corn (this vignette came from a painting by John B. White). This scene is flanked by the denomination (repeated), and the notation that this note is actually
“REVENUE BOND SCRIP”
and not currency. Printed below the scene, in bold letters is
“STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA”
, followed by a financial obligation which states that this piece was
“Receivable as FIVE DOLLARS on payment of all taxes and dues to the State, except special tax levied to pay interest on public debt.”
. Two smaller vignettes dominate the lower corners, the one at the left depicting Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter (Fort Sumter was named in his honor), and that at the right being General William Moultrie, another Revolutionary War officer. The engraved signature of the state treasurer appears at the lower right. The note was issued at
“Columbia, S. C.”
and is dated
“March 2
nd
1872”
. A rectangular border, composed of the denomination and the date, encloses the entire design. The back design features numerous geometric designs, with the denomination atop those at the left and right. A statement within a central box indicates that this note was
“ISSUED UNDER AN ACT TO RELIEVE THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA OF ALL LIABILITY FOR ITS GUARANTY OF THE BONDS OF THE BLUE RIDGE RAILROAD COMPANY, BY PROVIDING FOR THE SECURING AND DESTRUCTION OF THE SAME. MARCH 2, 1872”
. This note was printed by the
“AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N. Y.”
, a fact verified by their imprint at the bottom center. Notes of this type are always popular with collectors due to the central vignette, as well as the portraits of the two Patriot generals.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ”
, with the additional “EPQ” designation indicating that this note exhibits “
Exceptional Paper Quality
” for the type. Light toning is present across the entire surface, somewhat more pronounced on the back due to the more open design. The margins are relatively uniform, though tight, with the edges being only slightly irregular. Nice contrast and an attractive design. A super note to add to your collection. Worthy of a strong bid.
